We’d been through the city before — quick stops, layovers, the kind of visit where you see the skyline from a distance and feel like you’ve checked a box. But at some point, something shifted. And somewhere between a stranger in Queens who spent ten minutes walking us to a subway entrance we couldn’t find, and a bodega owner in the Bronx who talked to us like we’d been neighbors for years — we finally got it.
